Music with quality

This is about Pat Metheney's album: Imaginary Day. Pat Metheney makes jazz fusion music. The album Imaginary Day is very rich in different incorporated styles and sounds. Personally, for certain songs, I get this Carlos Santana feeling but that is also due to the fact that, sometimes, Carlos and Pat both play songs with a Gibson and obviously that sound is very universal. (No they do not play together on this album, they played together in 1985 on a little concert called Live Aid.) Anyway, I like this album because of it's very laid back style. The instrumental setting is rich but not "messy" or disturbing. The over all harmonies of the melodies are nicely supported by the rhythm sections and both are leaving enough space for one and another to be heard without battling for attention or space. A wonderful piece of craftsmanship, enjoy...

The music of Reba McEntire is country music influenced by pop, soul and R&B. When you hear her voice you know that you will be listening to country music. Reba is one of those rare artists who doesn't need to have approval from the press in order to see that her records are sold. It has happened that the press gave negative reviews of an album and yet that same album became platinum. (The album is called Starting Over). It shows you that in the end it's your public that decides if you are successful or not. Reba's music isn't exactly innovative or groundbreaking but it's nice to hear and with more than seventy million albums sold, well, what do I have to say other than... Enjoy her music.

This is about Cat Power's ninth album called: Sun. I think this is a great album. I was intrigued by the term sadcore (pretty self explanatory however) so I decided to listen to this. I think Cat Power has just nailed it. This is a dark album, Gothic influences certainly but it doesn't get depressive. It has a fairly rich instrumental setting and that makes that the songs offer new things to discover in a permanent movement. The voices are nicely put down, no howling or crying, no the vocals are carefully placed and gently woven into the music. If you like Lana Del Rey, Portishead or Joy Division give this a try. I hope that Cat Power will surprise again in the future with music like this. A great job, well done. Enjoy the album...

A wonderful southern country, rhythm and blues band. The music they make is a kind of make you feel good music. After listening to this for a while, you will feel more positive. The Marshall Tucker Band have their own sound and as a bonus, the vocalist (Doug Gray) is just extraordinary. What a voice. You can hear that Mr Gray is no stranger to gospel music. I do actually think that the band is no stranger to jazz or progressive rock either. It will perhaps not be that obvious the first time you listen to them but you may catch up on that after a few times. Here's a collection of their work, enjoy...

A band like no others as this band has entered the Guiness Book of Records as the most successful virtual band. The only permanent members are Damon Albarn (what band is he from again?) and Jamie Hewlett (no relation to Packard) the cartoon book artist. The Gorillaz have sold quite a few million albums all over the world and their music is influenced by pop, rock, alternative, hip hop and dub. That means that you can expect a lot of different atmospheres and ambiances. A great exposure of creativity and it's all very  easy on the ears. Enjoy this collection...

Oh, yes... He's the man. Mr Joe Satriani. This man must have eaten shredded guitar for cereals in his breakfast bowl of milk. If you are a guitar lover I shouldn't have to tell you anything but if you are a guitar lover and don't know this artist go in the corner for thirty minutes than get here, read and listen to this. Joe Satriani is the man you need as your guitar teacher (because that's how it started for him.) Former students are for example: Kirk Hammett and Steve Vai. All techniques of playing a guitar are mastered by this man. This is a person that has obtained the titel (given by his peers and colleagues) Guitar Virtuoso. There's no need for further explanations, enjoy his music...

The Miracles where the first band to make it big for the Motown record label. Smokey Robinson was the original founder and lead vocalist. The influence that they have had on artists is almost unbelievable. Not only did they have a huge influence on artists like Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones or the Beatles but even on artists like Wham, Michael McDonald or Phil Collins. The sound of R&B music of today would simply not have been possible if it weren't for The Miracles. A special mention as well for the brilliant guitar work of Mr Marv Tarplin. His guitar licks are a joy to hear and to rediscover. Wonderfully subtle at times and at moments being the motor of the song entirely. Absolutely marvelous. Enjoy the music of The Miracles...

Joy Division was like a door that opened to a new style of music that can be described as a form of electronic, Gothic kind of pop/rock music. It's difficult to say exactly where the line should be drawn but than again as this band was creating a new sound and new ways of playing, it's difficult to put their music in a particular style anyway. You can sort of feel similar ambiances in their songs as you may find with the Doors, the Cure or NIN etc. A sort of dark and even depressing sensation. The bass and the drums that play with the melody rather than creating a structured rhythm section that carries the melody, helps to enhance this sensation. A great musical find. Enjoy a collection of their music...

Nickel Creek played progressive, acoustic music. I'm a huge fan of this. Their influences are country, pop and rock. Their vocal work would have been and perhaps is appreciated by the Beach Boys. Mandolin, violin, guitar and here and there a bass. It's all they need and of course their voices. (Oh men they sing so lovely). It didn't last long but they have given the world three albums that show what a great musicians they are. Currently the three members are involved in different projects and it is unsure whether they will ever perform together again but the name of their last tour leaves some hope: The farewell for now, tour. So who knows. Enjoy their music.

This band makes good, creative, original rock music, well Wikipedia calls it alternative rock, but hey, you say tomato, I say rock. When I read about Jane's Addiction it made me wonder how they had the time and courage to be together and record albums. It's a four piece band and it seems they are quite a bunch of characters. (heavy drugs using did not make things easier) Since the debut album released in 1988 the band have recorded a total of four albums, the last one released in 2011.  All the members have been busy with side projects and have also released albums with these projects and on top of that, they have played with a lot of other artists on their respective albums. Here you can listen to their music. Enjoy...
