Garbage

What I like about Garbage is the fact they have willingly dodged all tricks and popular gimmicks in order to make it big based on originality while not trying to fit in. This approach is responsible for their sound and music style. The music is considered rock. Though sometimes you may get the impression that they were actually aiming to make pop music. It's distorted, dark-ish but has from time to time a sort of weird "black happy feel" over it. The female voice does a remarkable job for the band. From whispering to moaning to stating to singing, smoothly, harsh or tender, Shirley Manson gives an extra dimension to the songs. There aren't a lot of vocalists who are able to control, dare I say, restrain themselves while at the same time stay versatile. A fantastic job. And there is of course the diversity in songs and structures that make Garbage a band able to treat it's listeners to a voyage from one extreme ambiance to the next, without using speed or aggression and that is a very rare feat that should be treasured.
