A band that started out with shoe-gazing mixed with psycho music and went on to make one of the most melodic and beautiful albums in the history of music. The album is called Urban Hymns and that album contains the song Bitter Sweet Symphony. (You remember?) I was always surprised to see that song being credited to Jagger/Richards, so I did some research.
This is where it started, this is the original: The Last Time, written and performed by Jagger/Richards and the Stones. Now I agree, this didn't really help to understand why Bitter Sweet Symphony had to be credited to them. What I never knew (and with me a lot of people not living in the UK) is that there are people in the UK who (just for fun, I suppose) transform any form of popular music (rock, pop, heavy metal etc.) into a classical sounding piece of music. So did a Mr. Andrew Loog Oldham and the result is here. (The recording is cut at the end, sorry).
And that is where you start to recognise the Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony. I have put up the album here, have a good time and enjoy...
Urban Hymns A Northern Soul
Just next of the album I have put up their previous album: A Northern Soul. This album wasn't as successful as the Urban Hymns album but it is very nice to listen to because from there you can discover the start of how the Urban Hymns album is going to be. You will already here similar structures in songs and melodic lines that will become the bases for songs in Urban Hymns. Enjoy.
